HDD shredding is intended for non-reuse. It differs from logical wiping, degaussing, and crushing. It also differs from SSD destruction because SSDs store data in small NAND packages rather than magnetic platters.
Data Destruction Inc. provides hard drive shredding with on-site and controlled off-site options, serialized reporting, witnessed processing, and Certificates of Destruction.
What Is Inside a Hard Drive?
A magnetic HDD can contain:
- One or more platters
- Magnetic recording layers
- Spindle motor
- Read/write heads
- Actuator assembly
- Controller board
- Cache or other persistent components
- Sealed metal enclosure
- Labels and serial identifiers
The target user data is recorded magnetically on platter surfaces. Hybrid drives can also include flash and require additional assessment.
The Shredding Process
1. Authorization and inventory
The client releases drives after retention, legal hold, investigation, and reuse decisions. Serial numbers, asset tags, containers, or batch identifiers are recorded.
2. Secure staging
Drives remain in controlled containers or storage until processing. Failed, disputed, evidence-held, SSD, tape, and other media are segregated.
3. Media identification
Operators confirm that the device is an HDD and that the machine and output are approved. Some SSDs and HDDs look similar. Manufacturer and model checks reduce routing errors.
4. Feed and cutting
The drive enters a cutting chamber. Interlocking cutters pull the enclosure through and apply shear, tearing, and deformation forces.
5. Output separation
Processed material exits as mixed metal, platter, circuit-board, motor, and enclosure remnants. Equipment can include screens or output controls, but designs differ.
6. Inspection
Personnel inspect the output for intact drives, bypassed material, large platter areas, jams, and unacceptable remnants.
7. Reprocessing
Rejected output is contained and run through an approved additional process.
8. Documentation and downstream handling
The provider records the event, completes reconciliation and certificates, and transfers accepted remnants to an approved material process.
Shredding vs. Crushing

Shredding vs. Degaussing
Degaussing changes magnetic domains using a field matched to media coercivity. Shredding physically alters the media.
Degaussing can support Purge for eligible magnetic HDDs when performed correctly. It can render the drive unusable. Some governing procedures require physical deformation after degaussing before release.
Degaussing does not work on SSDs, NAND flash, or optical media.
Shredding vs. Wiping
Wiping and device sanitize operations preserve potential reuse. Shredding eliminates reuse.
Choose logical sanitization when:
- Drive is healthy
- Reuse or resale is approved
- A suitable technique is available
- Completion can be verified
- Policy accepts Clear or Purge
Choose shredding when:
- Destroy is required
- Drive failed or is inaccessible
- Reuse is prohibited
- Logical sanitization failed
- Sensitive data and disposition require non-reuse
- Contract requires physical destruction
Why HDD Shredding Is Not SSD Shredding
HDD data is spread across platter surfaces. SSD data is concentrated in NAND packages and dies.
An HDD shredder can deform an SSD enclosure but leave NAND packages intact. Route SSDs, NVMe modules, USB media, and mobile-device boards through equipment and output requirements suited to solid-state components.

Particle Size and Output Requirements
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 does not prescribe one universal commercial HDD particle size. The organization assigns an acceptable output using media type, data sensitivity, threat model, current technical guidance, agency requirements, and contract terms.
Current NSA/CSS Policy Manual 9-12 applies within its scope and requires use of applicable current procedures and Evaluated Products Lists. Those requirements should not be converted into a universal NIST rule.
A provider should state:
- Equipment model
- Media accepted
- Output configuration
- Expected remnant dimensions or deformation
- Inspection method
- Rejection threshold
- Reprocessing method
What Verification Looks Like
Verification confirms that each drive was processed and that output meets the assigned condition.
Check:
- Serial number or controlled batch
- Correct HDD classification
- Equipment identity
- Feed completion
- No bypassed or intact drive
- Platter deformation and fragmentation
- Oversize remnants
- Jam recovery
- Reprocessing
- Operator, date, location, and witness
Validation then determines whether the result is acceptable for target-data sensitivity and disposition.
On-Site vs. Off-Site Shredding
On-site shredding can:
- Keep readable drives at the client location until processing
- Support direct witnessing
- Reduce pre-destruction transport
It requires suitable mobile equipment, secure work area, power, noise, dust, safety, output containment, and reprocessing capability.
Off-site shredding can provide fixed equipment, controlled facility access, larger throughput, and downstream handling. It adds transport, receipt, storage, and processing-time controls.

Chain of Custody
A chain-of-custody record can capture:
- Drive serial and asset number
- Source system and location
- Container and seal
- Pickup personnel
- Vehicle and route
- Receiving reconciliation
- Secure staging
- Processing event
- Witness
- Exception
- Remnant transfer
A secure machine does not compensate for a missing drive before processing.
Certificate of Destruction
A Certificate of Destruction and supporting report can include:
- Client and project
- HDD make, model, and serial
- Destroy method
- Shredding technique
- Equipment
- Verification and validation result
- Date, location, operator, and witness
- Exceptions and reprocessing
- Downstream handling
Avoid vague wording such as “drives were disposed of securely.”
Safety and Environmental Controls
HDD shredding can create:
- Sharp metal
- Ejected fragments
- Dust
- Noise
- Heavy lifting
- Pinch and entanglement hazards
- Heat and equipment jams
Use guards, interlocks, trained operators, protective equipment, maintenance, emergency stops, and controlled material handling.
Do not feed lithium-ion batteries, pressurized components, or unapproved mixed equipment into an HDD shredder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does hard drive shredding erase data?
It physically destroys and fragments the magnetic storage when the approved process and output are achieved. Verification and validation remain necessary.
Can a shredded HDD be reused?
No. Destroy leaves the medium unable to store data.
Is shredding better than wiping?
They serve different goals. Wiping can preserve reuse; shredding is a non-reuse Destroy route.
Is crushing the same as shredding?
No. Crushing deforms a drive, while shredding cuts it into multiple remnants. Either result must be assessed against the assigned requirement.
Must an HDD be degaussed before shredding?
Not under every commercial policy. Some classified or contract procedures require degaussing and deformation. Check current governing requirements.
Can the same shredder destroy SSDs?
Only if the equipment and output are specifically approved for solid-state media. HDD output can leave NAND packages too intact.
Does NIST require 2 mm HDD particles?
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 does not set one universal HDD particle size.
