On-Site Data Destruction

With on-site data destruction, our equipment comes to you, so every drive, tape, and device is destroyed before it leaves your control. Your team can watch it happen, the work meets NIST SP 800-88 r2, and you receive a serialized Certificate of Destruction provided within 24 hours after the destruction event is complete. It is the most defensible choice for regulated US organizations that cannot let media off-site.

Off-Site Data Destruction

Media is sealed, GPS-tracked, and destroyed at a secured facility under recorded surveillance, delivering high-volume destruction at the lowest per-unit cost. Full chain of custody runs from your door to the destruction event, closed with a serialized certificate.

Witnessed Destruction

An observed, attested destruction event where your employee, auditor, or regulator watches every asset destroyed, in person or by live video. A named witness, serial-number reconciliation, and timestamped attestation are bound to the Certificate of Destruction.

Scheduled Destruction Program

Recurring destruction on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly cadence sized to your decommissioning rate, with lockable interim containers between cycles. Each cycle produces its own certificate, consolidated into one master audit file.

Mobile Hard Drive Shredding

Truck-mounted industrial shredders reduce drives to NIST 800-88 r2 particles in your parking lot before they leave your property. Each job is logged by serial number and closed with a Certificate of Destruction.

How On-Site Data Destruction Works

Bottom line: because destruction happens in your line of sight, on-site service removes the transit gap that causes most disposal breaches.

On-site destruction eliminates transport risk by completing the destruction event at your facility, in your line of sight. The process runs in five steps:

  1. Scheduling. We confirm the asset inventory, media types, access requirements, and a service window for the mobile destruction unit.

  2. Arrival and reconciliation. A bonded, background-checked crew arrives in an equipped truck and reconciles your assets against the manifest by serial number.

  3. Witnessed destruction. Drives are shredded to a 6 mm commercial particle size, or 2 mm for classified media, satisfying NIST SP 800-88 r2 Destroy. Self-encrypting drives slated for reuse can instead take the Purge path via cryptographic erase.

  4. Verification. Each destroyed asset is logged, and your witness signs the custody record if required.

  5. Certificate. Your signed chain-of-custody record is handed over before the crew leaves, and a serialized Certificate of Destruction is provided within 24 hours after the destruction event is complete. Shredded material is routed to compliant recycling.

For the conceptual background on why physical destruction is required, see sanitization vs destruction.

Compliance and Standards

On-site destruction is the strongest defensible position for regulators because the destruction event happens under your control and can be witnessed.

Standard / regulation

Requirement

How on-site destruction satisfies it

NIST SP 800-88 r2

Media rendered infeasible to recover

Destroy or Purge performed at your site

HIPAA

PHI rendered unreadable

Drives destroyed before leaving custody

GLBA Safeguards Rule

Secure disposal of financial data

Witnessed destruction plus CoD

CMMC media sanitization

Controlled media sanitized for CUI

On-site Destroy with custody record

HHS guidance on disposing of protected health information requires covered entities to render PHI unreadable and never abandon it intact, which an on-site destruction event documents directly. Classified and CUI programs that require an observed destruction event should pair this service with witnessed destruction.

Anchor Mode and Alternatives

On-site is the anchor mode of this page: destruction at your facility, before assets leave your control. Two alternatives exist when on-site is not required:

For drive-specific shredding at your site, see on-site hard drive shredding.

Industries We Serve

On-site destruction is bought by organizations whose policy or regulator requires destruction to be completed inside the facility.

  • Healthcare. Hospitals with strict custody policies destroy PHI-bearing drives before any media leaves the building, satisfying the HIPAA disposal rule with a serialized certificate your team can witness.

  • Federal agencies. FISMA and records-custody mandates require CUI media to be sanitized or destroyed under documented process, which on-site service satisfies without shipping media off premises.

  • Defense contractors. CMMC 2.0 and DFARS require CUI to be destroyed under controlled process, and on-site destruction at your cleared facility avoids any uncontrolled transfer of classified media.

  • Financial services. GLBA and SOX programs destroy core-banking and record-keeping drives on-site, keeping custody unbroken from rack to destruction.

What You Receive

  • Serialized Certificate of Destruction. Lists each asset by serial number, method, the NIST 800-88 r2 category satisfied, and the date, provided within 24 hours after the destruction event is complete.

  • Chain-of-custody log. A signed record covering the full on-site service window, opening and closing at your address with no transport leg.

  • Witness attestation. A signed, timestamped statement confirming your team observed the destruction event, where a witness is present.

  • Recycling-stream attestation. Confirms residual material was routed to compliant downstream recovery for zero-landfill disposal.

Pricing and Quote Process

On-site destruction is quoted per visit plus per-drive or per-pound destruction, and carries a site-visit component that off-site service does not. Pricing depends on asset volume, media mix, travel to your metro, and witnessing requirements. We sign an NDA before the visit, and consolidating assets into a single trip lowers the per-drive cost. Request a free site quote with your location and approximate asset count, and we will confirm scheduling and pricing in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does on-site data destruction cost compared to off-site?

On-site carries a site-visit fee that off-site data destruction does not, so off-site is usually cheaper per drive at high volume. On-site is chosen when drives must not leave your control.

Can my team watch the destruction?

Yes. On-site destruction can be witnessed by your staff, auditor, or regulator. For a formal observed program, see witnessed destruction.

What media can you destroy on-site?

Hard drives, SSDs, magnetic tape, optical media, and mobile devices. SSDs are shredded to a 2 mm particle size.

How fast do I receive the Certificate of Destruction?

The signed chain-of-custody record is handed to your team before the crew leaves, and the serialized Certificate of Destruction is provided within 24 hours after the destruction event is complete.

Where do you provide on-site service?

Across all 50 states from seven staffed metros (Dallas, New York, San Jose, San Diego, Los Angeles, Irvine, and Washington, DC).
