What is optical media destruction?

Optical media destruction is the physical reduction of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs into fragments small enough that the recorded surface cannot be read. Optical media store data as microscopic pits and lands, or as changes in a dye or phase-change layer, that a laser reads. Because the data is optical rather than magnetic, magnetic methods do nothing.

NIST SP 800-88 r2 lists no Clear or Purge path for optical media and recognizes only Destroy: shredding, disintegration, pulverizing, or incineration. Data Destruction Inc. uses shredding and disintegration to a controlled particle size, sized to the sensitivity of the data.

How does optical media destruction work?

Optical media destruction works by feeding discs through a shredder or disintegrator that reduces them to fragments below a target particle size. Data Destruction Inc. runs a documented sequence so every disc is accounted for.

  1. Inventory and scan discs and spindles under documented chain of custody.
  2. Stage discs for a shredder or disintegrator set to the required particle size.
  3. Destroy the discs into fragments that cannot be reconstructed.
  4. Capture residue and record counts, weights, and operator sign-off.
  5. Route residue to responsible downstream recovery, then issue the Certificate of Destruction.

Why optical discs cannot be degaussed or wiped

Optical discs cannot be degaussed or wiped because their data is not stored magnetically and, for burned discs, cannot be rewritten. This is the single most important fact about optical sanitization.

  • No magnetic domains. A degausser scrambles magnetic media only, so it has zero effect on a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc.
  • Write-once media. CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-R physically alter a dye or recording layer when burned, and that change cannot be undone by software.
  • Surface reading. Because a laser reads a physical surface, only physical destruction of that surface guarantees the data is gone.

That is the opposite of magnetic media such as Magnetic Tape Destruction targets, where degaussing is a valid Purge. Matching the method to the medium is the core discipline of NIST-aligned sanitization.
