What is network equipment destruction?

Network equipment destruction is the secure sanitization and physical destruction of the data-bearing components inside routers, switches, firewalls, and access points. The target is not the chassis but the configuration data: stored credentials, encryption keys, access control lists, VPN settings, and logs.

Most network devices keep this data in embedded flash or NVRAM, and higher-end firewalls add onboard hard drives or SSDs for logging. Because flash cannot be reliably overwritten and cannot be degaussed, NIST SP 800-88 r2 favors physical destruction for the flash, with drives sanitized by their own media type.

  4. Record serials, methods, particle sizes, and operator sign-off.
  5. Route residue to responsible downstream recovery, then issue the Certificate of Destruction.

Why a config reset does not protect you

A configuration reset does not fully protect you because it targets the active configuration, not every place data is retained. This is the central risk with network hardware.

  • Residual flash contents can persist after a reset, including cached credentials and keys.
