Off-Site Data Wiping Service

Data Destruction Inc. collects your drives under sealed, GPS-tracked chain of custody, wipes them to the NIST SP 800-88 r2 Clear or Purge level at a secured facility, and returns the verified drives or recycles them on your instruction. Off-site data wiping is the hands-off, high-volume option, and every job closes with a serialized erasure report and Certificate of Destruction provided within 24 hours after the wipe is complete.

HARD DRIVE DATA WIPING

Software overwrite that sanitizes reusable drives to the NIST 800-88 r2 Clear or Purge level and verifies every drive, returning a per-drive erasure report. Keeps hardware in service for redeployment, resale, or lease return.

SECURE DATA DELETION SOFTWARE

OFF-SITE DATA WIPING

Drives are sealed, GPS-tracked, and wiped at a secured facility, then returned or recycled. Verified overwrite to NIST 800-88 r2 with a per-drive erasure report, suited to high volumes handled off-site.

HARD DRIVE DEGAUSSING

High-energy magnetic erasure that meets the NIST 800-88 r2 Purge standard for HDDs and tape. It permanently retires magnetic media and has no effect on SSDs or other flash.

How Off-Site Data Wiping Works

Off-site data wiping moves the work to our facility while keeping a documented chain of custody from your floor to the final report. You schedule a pickup, we seal and transport the drives, wipe and verify each one, and return them or route them to recycling.

Bottom line: off-site wiping trades on-premise oversight for lower per-drive cost and higher throughput, with custody held tamper-evident and GPS-tracked the entire time.

The process runs in six steps:

  1. Scheduled pickup. Bonded, background-checked operators collect your drives at a time you set.

  2. Sealed handling. Drives are locked in tamper-evident containers at your site and stay sealed in transit.

  3. GPS-tracked transport. Containers move in alarm-equipped vehicles under real-time tracking to a secured facility.

  4. Verified wipe. Each drive is overwritten and read-back verified, mapped to its NIST 800-88 r2 category, with per-drive status logged.

  5. Disposition. Verified drives are returned to you for reuse, or routed to hard drive disposal and recycling if you prefer.

  6. Reporting. The serialized manifest is reconciled and closed with an erasure report and Certificate of Destruction.

For drives that cannot be verifiably wiped, or media that is leaving for good, off-site service can switch to physical destruction in the same run. See off-site data destruction and hard drive shredding.

Is Off-Site Data Wiping Secure?

Yes, when custody is sealed and documented. The risk in any off-site model is the transport leg, so we remove the unknowns: tamper-evident containers sealed at your site, alarm-equipped vehicles, real-time GPS, and a serialized manifest reconciled at the facility. You receive a chain-of-custody log that accounts for every asset at every handoff. If your policy does not allow media to leave the building at all, choose on-site data wiping instead.

On-Site or Off-Site: Which Wiping Mode Fits

Factor Off-site data wiping On-site data wiping
Custody Sealed, GPS-tracked to our facility Never leaves your building
Throughput Higher, batch processing Limited to the on-site visit
Per-drive cost Lower Higher (truck and operator time)
Best for Volume refresh, lease return, decommissioning Classified, high-sensitivity, witness-required jobs
Documentation Erasure report, certificate, custody log Same, issued at your site

Which Regulations Off-Site Wiping Satisfies

A verified off-site wipe satisfies the disposal and reuse requirements of the major US regulations, with the chain-of-custody log carrying the transport accountability. The standard of record is NIST SP 800-88 r2, published September 2025.

Regulation

Requirement

How off-site wiping satisfies it

NIST SP 800-88 r2

Sanitize media with a method matched to data confidentiality

Verified overwrite meets Clear; Secure Erase or cryptographic erase meets Purge.

HIPAA / HITECH, 45 CFR 164.310(d)(2)(i)

Address final disposition of electronic PHI

Sealed custody plus an erasure report documents disposal for transported media.

FACTA Disposal Rule, 16 CFR 682

Destroy consumer report information by reasonable measures

Verified sanitization under documented custody meets the reasonable-measures standard.

The FTC explains the disposal standard for consumer report information in its FACTA Disposal Rule guidance. NIST SP 800-88 r2 is published at nvlpubs.nist.gov.

Industries We Serve

Off-site wiping serves organizations consolidating healthy drives for batch sanitization at our facility.

  • Data centers. Lease-return and refresh cycles ship healthy drives off-site for batch wiping and redeployment.

  • Financial services. GLBA programs wipe transported endpoint drives under sealed custody and reconcile every asset.

  • Healthcare. Multi-site systems consolidate drives for off-site wiping with documented HIPAA disposal evidence.

  • Federal agencies. CUI media is wiped off-site to the NIST 800-88 r2 Purge level with a verification report for audit.

What You Receive

  • Serialized erasure report. Lists each drive’s serial number, method, NIST 800-88 r2 category, and verification result, the documented proof of sanitization for every reused drive.

  • Certificate of Destruction. Provided within 24 hours after the wipe is complete.

  • Chain-of-custody log. Covers pickup, transport, wipe, and disposition under sealed custody.

  • Exception list. Flags any drive routed to physical destruction after a failed verification.

Pricing and Quote Process

Off-site wiping is quote-driven and carries the lowest per-drive rate of our wiping modes because drives are processed in batches. Pricing depends on volume, media mix, return-versus-recycle disposition, and pickup geography. The quote is free and carries no obligation, and volume and recurring pickups earn lower per-drive rates.

For procurement-driven engagements, we sign an NDA before any job begins. Request a quote or call (866) 850-7977 to schedule a pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions About Off-Site Data Wiping

How is off-site data wiping kept secure in transit?

Drives are sealed in tamper-evident containers at your site, moved in alarm-equipped, GPS-tracked vehicles, and reconciled against a serialized manifest at the facility. The chain-of-custody log accounts for every asset at every handoff.

Will I get my drives back after off-site wiping?

Yes, if you choose return. A verified wipe keeps drives functional, so they come back ready to redeploy. You can also instruct us to recycle them through documented hard drive disposal.

What if a drive cannot be wiped?

It is flagged on the exception list and switched to physical destruction in the same run, so no drive leaves in an unknown state.

Is off-site or on-site wiping more secure?

On-site keeps media in your building and is the stronger fit for classified or witness-required jobs. Off-site is secure under sealed, GPS-tracked custody and is better suited to high volume and lower cost.

How fast is the Certificate of Destruction issued?

Within 24 hours after the wipe is complete. It is serialized and delivered with the erasure report by encrypted email and your customer portal.

Ready to Schedule an Off-Site Pickup?
