Tape Degaussing
Data Destruction Inc. purges backup tapes by degaussing them at a field strength matched to the tape generation, the NIST SP 800-88 r2 Purge outcome for magnetic media. Every job produces a serialized Certificate of Destruction.
Degaussing is the fastest way to erase a large tape estate, but only when the machine is strong enough for the tape. High-coercivity LTO media does not respond to a weak field, so the field strength, not the act of degaussing, is what determines whether the data is truly gone.
