What is tape degaussing?

Tape degaussing is the application of a strong alternating magnetic field to a tape cartridge, scrambling the magnetic patterns that hold data until nothing readable remains. It is a Purge outcome under NIST SP 800-88 r2, meaning the data is rendered unrecoverable using laboratory techniques.

A degausser generates a field measured in oersteds. To erase a tape, that field must exceed the tape coercivity, the resistance of the medium to demagnetization. Because degaussing also erases the factory servo tracks, a degaussed tape is left intact in shape but permanently unusable.

How does tape degaussing work?

Tape degaussing works by passing each cartridge through a degausser rated for its coercivity, then documenting the erasure. Data Destruction Inc. follows a documented sequence.

  1. Inventory and scan cartridges, capturing barcodes under documented chain of custody.
  2. Identify each tape generation and match it to a degausser with adequate field strength.
  3. Degauss each cartridge, confirming the machine operated within its rated field.
  4. Record counts, tape formats, field strength, and operator sign-off.
  5. Route tapes to responsible downstream recovery or optional shredding, then issue the Certificate of Destruction.

Field strength decides whether degaussing succeeds because tape coercivity has risen with every generation. Getting this wrong leaves recoverable data on an apparently erased tape.

  • Coercivity climbs by generation, so a degausser sized for older DLT may not erase current LTO.
  • Underpowered degaussing can leave partial magnetic patterns that a lab could recover.
