Tape Degaussing

Data Destruction Inc. purges backup tapes by degaussing them at a field strength matched to the tape generation, the NIST SP 800-88 r2 Purge outcome for magnetic media. Every job produces a serialized Certificate of Destruction.

Degaussing is the fastest way to erase a large tape estate, but only when the machine is strong enough for the tape. High-coercivity LTO media does not respond to a weak field, so the field strength, not the act of degaussing, is what determines whether the data is truly gone.

What is tape degaussing?

Tape degaussing is the application of a strong alternating magnetic field to a tape cartridge, scrambling the magnetic patterns that hold data until nothing readable remains. It is a Purge outcome under NIST SP 800-88 r2, meaning the data is rendered unrecoverable using laboratory techniques.

A degausser generates a field measured in oersteds. To erase a tape, that field must exceed the tape coercivity, the resistance of the medium to demagnetization. Because degaussing also erases the factory servo tracks, a degaussed tape is left intact in shape but permanently unusable.

How does tape degaussing work?

Tape degaussing works by passing each cartridge through a degausser rated for its coercivity, then documenting the erasure. Data Destruction Inc. follows a documented sequence.

  1. Inventory and scan cartridges, capturing barcodes under documented chain of custody.
  2. Identify each tape generation and match it to a degausser with adequate field strength.
  3. Degauss each cartridge, confirming the machine operated within its rated field.
  4. Record counts, tape formats, field strength, and operator sign-off.
  5. Route tapes to responsible downstream recovery or optional shredding, then issue the Certificate of Destruction.

Many high-assurance programs degauss first and then shred, combining a Purge with a Destroy. That escalation path runs through our

Why field strength decides the outcome

What tape formats can be degaussed?

Degaussing works on any magnetic tape, provided the field strength is matched to the format.

FormatNotes
LTO 1 through LTO 9High coercivity, requires a rated degausser
DLT and SDLTCommon in older enterprise backups
DAT and DDSSmall-format audio-derived data tape
AIT and 3592Enterprise and mainframe formats
Reel-to-reelLegacy archives

How does tape degaussing meet NIST 800-88 r2?

Tape degaussing meets NIST SP 800-88 r2 as a Purge when the field strength exceeds the tape coercivity and the erasure is documented. The map below ties common rules to our process.

Which industries rely on tape degaussing?

Degaussing suits sectors that retire tape in high volume and need speed.

Frequently asked questions

Is degaussing enough on its own?

Yes, when the degausser field exceeds the tape coercivity, degaussing is a recognized NIST 800-88 r2 Purge. For visible proof or unverifiable tape generations, add shredding.

Can a degaussed tape be reused?

No. Degaussing erases the factory servo tracks along with the data, which permanently disables the tape. That is the expected result for retirement.

Why can't a standard degausser handle LTO?

Modern LTO uses high-coercivity media that resists weak fields. A degausser rated below the tape coercivity may leave recoverable data, so the machine must be matched to the format.

Do you degauss tapes on-site?

Yes. We offer on-site degaussing with witnessed options and secure off-site service under chain of custody. Call (866) 850-7977.

What proof do we receive?

A serialized Certificate of Destruction, a chain-of-custody log, and an itemized inventory with barcodes and the field strength applied.

What happens to the tapes after degaussing?

Erased cartridges are routed to responsible downstream recovery, or shredded on request, and the disposition is recorded in your package.
